Self-portrait (2011-)
I believe in photography’s ability to transcend time and space. I constantly revisit personal memories and history through my photography. Self-portrait, Mestre, Italy 2011 was an attempt to incorporate my personal history and the history of the architectural place. It was taken at a former convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie that was occupied by the army during and after wars and used as military barracks. After being vacant for 25 years, the Fondazione di Venezia acquired it to use for the future 20th century museum. The ghostly place inspired me to do a self-portrait series reflecting my dark memories from the past. I tried to portray an uncertain, fragile and dreamlike state of mind that overshadowed my youth.
