Elsewhere (2010 – )
Elsewhere is a series that searches for utopia in an ordinary world. It was inspired by An Gyeon’s Dream Visit to the Peach Blossom Land, a Korean painting made during the reign of King Sejong (r.1419-1450) who is credited for Golden Age of Korea. The painting was based on Prince Anpyeong’s journey to the utopia in his dream. It depicts reality and utopia next to each other in similar manners but there are obstacles to get to utopia from the reality. Based on this idea of utopia’s vicinity to the reality (in both physical distance and similarities in scenery), I photographed nature that is within the human society. At first, images may look like taken from elsewhere but places are right in the middle of the towns. Only portraying the utopia side by isolating each place, I attempt to create my vision of utopia. But less than steps away, the reality is present with residence and business.
