Dominick, the Cobbler (2008)
Dominick, the Cobbler portrays an elderly man’s love for his trade, a dying art made obsolete by today’s societal values and mass production mentality.
Dominick Tummillo (b.1928), a native of the Bronx, owns a shoe repair store in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. Tummillo is not just another shoemaker. Rather, he is a master craftsman who has the uncanny ability to revitalize any pair of shoes, no matter how worn or dilapidated. His moulds and arches are handcrafted and made from scratch to ensure the most comfortable fit for his customers. Not only are they comfortable, but also they transcend and surpass medical arches which Tummillo dismisses as “garbage.”
Tummillo learned his trade from his father who was an immigrant from Naples, Italy. In December 2007, Tummillo suffered a heart attack but he continues to work in his 80s, motivated by the love of his craft.
